Killer Panda Cat

Description

A Butcher Cat (Xenosmilus hodsonae) tackles a Flat-Headed Peccary (Platygonus sp.) in Florida approximately a million years ago. Xenosmilus is unique among the saber-toothed cats as it belonged to neither of the two classic categories - "dirk-toothed" and "scimitar-toothed", having a stout body and legs as well as short broad canines. Its theorized hunting style was also unique. While many cats, modern and extinct, employ tactics that suffocate their prey or sever their spinal cord, it is theorized that Xenosmilus would have simply bit into its prey and retreated, following its prey at a safe distance until it died of blood loss. Here, this Xenosmilus is portrayed pulling its prey closer to itself in order to make a bite. Xenosmilus was known to hunt peccaries, and its two often-given nicknames are the "cookie-cutter cat" (due to its hunting strategy) and "panda cat" (due to its stout build, the fact that it walked on its heels, and an almost opposable "thumb").
